In the Faculty of Medicine, lecturers use a diverse spectrum of innovative media formats to support teaching and learning. Within RWTH, the Faculty of Medicine has pioneered the development and use of multimedia learning applications and innovative media formats such as interactive videos, 3D videos, 360° videos, multiview videos, and interactive animations.

A few examples of different media formats or learning applications resulting from close collaboration between the clinics and institutes of the Faculty of Medicine and AVMZ are listed below.

 

Decision Video for Learning a Practical Skill

This example of a video for learning a practical skill is part if a complex learning application designed to teach the handling and mixing techniques of alginate.

The didactic structure of the learning application is divided into the areas "Informing, Understanding, Reflecting, Practicing." The choices selected determine the futher course of action of the video. Feedback is only provided at the end of the video or the working process so that the users experience the full consequences (including negative ones) of their decisions.

This decision video was developed in cooperation between dentist Anne Rittich, Department of Prosthodontics and Biomaterials, Center for Implantology, and the AVMZ and is used in the "TPK Course" (Technical Propaedeutic Course) of the preclinical program.

 

Learning Application for Flipped/Inverted Classroom Scenarios

This learning application presents six cases that are used in flipped classroom scenarios. These case studies are related to topics discussed in neuropathology, neuroanatomy, neuroradiology, and neurology lectures.

The following example contains a chapter/case study of the learning application.

The learning application is the result of a close collaboration between Dr. Bernd Sellhaus, Institute of Neuropathology and the AVMZ and is used in the neurohistopathology course in the qualification profile "Growth and Differentiation of Neuropathology."

 

Virtual Lab

The learning application Virtual Microscopy is used in numerous courses of the medical study program, for example in the system blocks respiration, musculoskeletal system, gastrointestinal tract, heart and circulatory system, urinary and reproductive organs, as well as in the cross-section propaedeutics of clinical pathology.

For each organ system, learning units are offered which are suitable for independent self-paced study, preparation and follow-up of the face-to-face phase as well as during the face-to-face phase itself. Each lesson contains basic information about pathology, a guided examination with histological and other specimens that can be studied with the virtual microscope. All preparations are annotated so that the relevant areas can be quickly accessed.

The "Virtual Microscopy" was developed in cooperation between Dr. Till Braunschweig, Dr. Peter Boor, Dr. Nadine T. Gaisa, Institute of Pathology and the AVMZ.
