Writing academic texts is of vital importance for any researcher pursuing a Ph.D. or a scientific career. And, getting such texts published is essential for promoting one's own findings and for exerting impact on the academic community. The impact of any publication does, however, not only depend on compelling data and ideas, but most importantly on the writer's skills to present his/her work effectively in English. Successful writing, therefore, means knowing how to best communicate one's research in English, what criteria a well-written academic publication needs to fulfill, and how the writing and publication process can be managed most productively.
In this workshop, we will address all the above-mentioned issues. We will, on the one hand, discuss important strategies for developing powerful English sentences, paragraphs, and texts that meet the expectations of readers, reviewers, and editors alike. On the other hand, we are going to analyze your own work in progress in order to practice how to effectively organize your writing and how to successfully prepare your papers for publication. In addition, we will consider possible strategies for dealing with a range of common problems throughout the writing process.
The course combines constructive input with group work, individual reflection, and plenary discussions. In addition, various practical phases offer opportunities to discuss and receive both peer and expert feedback on one of your own pieces of academic writing. This should be either some sort of Introduction (e.g., to a paper or a dissertation proposal) and/or an Abstract (e.g., for a paper, a conference, or a proposal). However, other types of texts are also possible. You do not need to have a finished version yet; drafts at any stage of the writing process are perfectly fine!
To participate in the workshop, please email one (and only one!) of your texts – preferably as a Word-file – to the course instructor, Frank Lauterbach, at <email@example.com> at least 14 days before the beginning of the course, and please indicate in your email the context of your text (e.g., whether it is a draft for a publication, a section of your dissertation, a part of a proposal, etc.). Your texts will then (at least in part) be distributed to the other course participants a few days before the first class meeting so that they can be discussed and worked on throughout the course.
Please note that the workshop will be taught entirely in English. Thus, to participate and get the best out of it, you should be able to communicate quite fluently in English

defining the focus and objective of an academic text;
developing adequate outlines for paper introductions;
citing and paraphrasing other people's research properly;
recognizing the overall organization and coherence of research papers;
creating powerful abstracts and titles;
selecting and organizing the content of academic texts logically;
structuring the individual sections of a paper;
presenting and discussing your findings;
drafting well-focused paragraphs;
applying the stylistic conventions of academic writing;
writing clear and concise sentences in English;
avoiding typical grammatical mistakes and pitfalls;
using commas and other punctuation marks properly;
connecting sentences and linking ideas to make a text flow well;
overcoming potential obstacles or anxieties during various phases of writing;
mastering the submission, review, and publication process.
