Dr. Martin Thiele is awarded with the Price 2019 of the Society of German Chemists (Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker, GDCh) Group “Chemistry of Laundry” for the best dissertation in 2019. Dr. Thiele was awarded on October 23th during the European Detergent Conference within the framework of the SEPAWA Congress (23.-25.10.2019 Congress Hotel-Estrel in Berlin; www.sepawa-congress.de). The GDCh Award, including 3000 Euro, was given to Dr. Thiele as appreciation for his dissertation entitled: „Boosting the performance of a protease with polymers and surfactants“ which he performed at the chair of Biotechnology at the RWTH Aachen University.

Dr. Martin Thiele performed his dissertation at the Henkel Innovation Campus for Advanced and Sustainable Technologies (HICAST) at the RWTH Aachen University. The aim of HICAST ( Henkel - news release ) is the research and development of high performance and sustainable ingredients for future laundry detergents. As a member of the interdisciplinary team HICAST, Dr. Thiele studied within his dissertation the molecular interactions of proteases with surfactants and polymers used in laundry detergents. The obtained insights of the importance of calcium ions for the formation of supra-molecular complexes as reactors were used of a targeted boost of the enzymatic protease performance. His work was filed in patents and was published in high-ranking scientific journals.

The award committee members of GDCh evaluated his dissertation as follow “This work impressed by a broad methodical spectrum on high scientific level and a clear illustration of complex systems. The obtained results are of high relevance for the industrial development of future sustainable and efficient laundry and cleaning detergents.”
