Prof. Schwaneberg and Dr. Mehdi M. Davari, head of Prof. Schwaneberg’s computational biology division, visited the 66th SEPAWA congress at the Hotel-Estrel Berlin (

The annual SEPAWA congress is the most important meeting for the detergent, cosmetics and perfume industry in Europe. In more than 150 lectures and poster presentations, international experts presented current research results and innovative developments from the industrial sectors mentioned above. More than 260 companies presented their latest trends and products as well as diverse know-how in the exhibition area.

Prof. Schwaneberg and Dr. Mehdi M. Davari gave a lecture in the category Home Care/Detergents about Protein Engineering in HICAST for sustainable detergents. Prof. Schwaneberg presented the goals and latest results of the Henkel Innovation Campus for Advanced and Sustainable Technologies (HICAST) at RWTH Aachen University. Prof. Schwaneberg demonstrated the potential and limitations for design of tailor-made enzymes for detergent applications using directed evolution methods. Dr. Davari presented the progress of computer-assisted methods for protein engineering. Furthermore, Dr. Davari exposed the advantages of integrative research approaches employing computational modelling, colorimetric analysis, biophysical characterization and protein engineering. The main focus of his presentation was to generate detailed knowledge about the molecular interactions of detergent components that are fundamental for the development of novel detergent formulations.
