New PhD student: Liudmyla Goncharenko
Strating on 1st of March 2018, Liudmyla Goncharenko will join us as a PhD student. Liudmyla finished her Bachelor`s thesis on biogas production from brewery waste at the National Technical University of Ukraine (NTUU) in Kiev and her Master`s thesis on expression and cleavage of multimeric adhesive peptides at FH Aachen. She will conduct her PhD work on production of anchor peptides in the Biohybrid division of Dr. Felix Jakob within the project GreenRelease.

Starting on March 1st, 2018 Yi Qu will join our work group as a PhD student. Yi has recently completed his master`s thesis at the Chair of Organometallic Chemistry at RWTH Aachen University in the work group of Professor Jun Okuda. Yi Qu will work on novel ultrahigh throughput screening technologies for directed evolution in our ivDTv2 project.

New PostDoc: Marco Grull
The Schwaneberg group welcomes our new postdoc Marco Grull. Marco finished his B.sc. in human biology and microbiology at the FH Rhein Sieg in Bonn and his M.sc. at the RWTH Aachen University. He recently completed his PhD work entiteled "Expression of Hypericum perforatum derived prenyltransferases for the production of hyperforin precursor molecules" at the Insitute for Pharmaceutical Biology at the TU Braunschweig.
Marco Grull will join the Chiral Membranes II team that aims for the production of protein-polymer building blocks for chiral separation of versatile enantiomeric amino acid mixtures.

Christian Simons starts as Lab Manager in the Biohybrid systems division located in the DWI!
With Christian we are once again very pleased to welcome an "old acquaintance" back in our group. Originally born in Wolfenbüttel, Christian studied Biotechnology at the FH Aachen in Jülich and completed his bachelor`s thesis in our work group.
Christian decided to proceed with his master´s studies in Biotechnology once more at FH Aachen and successfully completed his master´s thesis in the University hospital Aachen.

Daniel Sauer has joined the group on January 1st 2018 as a postdoctoral fellow. Feng Lilin started her PhD in the Schwaneberg group on October 1st, 2017 and will stay for three years. She is a member of the Hybrid catalysis and HTS sub-division headed by Prof. Schwaneberg. Her PhD project focuses on i n vitro flow cytometry-based screening platforms for enzyme mutantsin biotechnology.

Gao Liang is a new PhD in our group and started his PhD project "Construction and application of a novel microbial whole-cell biocatalytic model comprising self-assembled membrane-protective shells" on October 1st, 2017. He will be supervised by Dr. Johannes Schiffels in the Next Generation Biocatalysis sub-division for three years.

Malte Wittwer started his PhD on September 1st, 2017 as a member of the Next Generation Biocatalysis sub-division supervised by Dr. Johannes Schiffels in the Schwaneberg group. He will work on the development of bio-factories comprising whole cell P450- and biohybrid catalysts embedded in synthetic biofilms. He stays in our group for three years.
New Postdoc: Lorenzo Pesci
Dr. Lorenzo Pesci joined the Schwaneberg group on September 1st 2017 as a new PostDoc and will stay with us for three years. He is working in the Hybrid catalysis and HTS sub-division supervised by Prof. Ulrich Schwaneberg. His project is entitled "Protein and process engineering of a lipase for bio-based plasticizers production" .
New PhD fellow: Matthias Offermann
Matthias Offermann joined the Schwaneberg group on August 1st, 2017 as a new PhD fellow. He will be part of the Next Generation Biocatalysis sub-division headed by Dr. Johannes Schiffels. In his PhD thesis, Matthias will engineer a sesquiterpene synthase to generate new, exciting terpenoid-based natural compounds. His project is part of the BioSC FocusLab CombiCom and outlined for three years. Welcome to the group!

Stefanie Brands started in the Schwaneberg group on August 1st, 2017 and is a member of the molecular bioeconomy sub-division headed by Dr. Joelle Ruff. Her project deals with the evolution of the enzyme PigC, which catalyses the final condensation step in the biosynthesis of prodiginines. The project is part of the BioSC FocusLab CombiCom. She will stay in our group for three years.

Gustavo Santos started on August 1st, 2017 as a new PhD fellow in the Schwaneberg group. As a member of the molecular bioeconomy sub-division, he is supervised by Dr. Joelle Ruff and will stay for three years. He will work on the evolution of heme-dependent monooxygenases which is part of the ITN oxytrain project.
New PostDoc: Lingling Zhang
Dr. Lingling Zhang started as a PostDoc in the Schwaneberg group on June 1st, 2017 and is a member of the interdisciplinary sub-division. Her project deals with electrochemical applications of laccase screening. She will stay in our group for at least two years.
New PostDoc: Leticia Novaes
Dr. Leticia Novaes has returned into the Schwaneberg group on June 16th, 2017 as a PostDoc and will stay for two years. She is working in the Biohybrid Systems sub-division headed by Dr. Felix Jakob. Currently, she is involved in the Pro-Planta project, which aims to protect plants with antimicrobial peptides and gallates from bacterial infections.

Soumiya Ezzahoini has joined the Schwaneberg group on April 5th, 2017 as technical assistant. She is working in the molecular bioeconomy sub-division, which is headed by Dr. Anna Joelle Ruff. Currently, Ms. Ezzahoini is involved in the Golgi Glykan Fabrik 2.0 project.
New PhD fellow: Subrata Pramanik
Subrata Pramanik starts as a PhD fellow in the Schwaneberg group on April 3rd, 2017 and is a part of the Computational Biology sub-division. His PhD project is a seed fund dealing with the structural and kinetic modeling of inhibitory ADAM10 and 17 in inflammation using empirical as well as simulation techniques.
New PostDoc: Richard Meurer
Richard Meurer has joined the group on March 1st 2017 as PostDoc. His current research topic is the development of in vitro high throughput screening platforms for directed evolution and cell-free metagenomics – iVDT2.
New PostDoc: Dr. Christoph Gertler
Dr. Christoph Gertler just joined the Schwaneberg team as PostDoc on the 1st of February, 2017. He assists in the publication activity, organizes industry contacts and supports grant capture of the institute.
New PostDoc: Dr. Islam El-Awaad
Dr. Islam Elawaad is also one of the new PostDocs since February 1st 2017. He is a part of the Biohybrid Systems sub-division, which is located in DWI-Leibniz Institute for Interactive Materials. He is working on the ZykloBox project, which deals with sustainable production of cyclic dinucleotide derivatives using a cyclase toolbox.
New lab manager: Claudia Wichlatz
From February 1st 2017 onwards, Claudia Wichlatz is the new lab manager in the DWI division of the Schwaneberg group. Her main duties are safety and security instruction, lab management and organization.
New PhD fellow: Ulrich Markel
Ulrich Markel started as PhD fellow in the Schwaneberg group on January 1st, 2017 and is a part of the project Hyka-synBio (BMBF research award). His PhD topic is the directed evolution of biohybrid catalysts for the synthesis of industrially relevant commodity and fine chemicals.
New PhD fellow: Khalil Essani
Another new PhD fellow is Khalil Essani, who also started on January 1st, 2017. Directed evolution at high mutational loads is part of his main PhD project, which belongs to an ETN project called Predictive and Accelerated Metabolic Engineering Network – PAcMEN.
